About Event

This course is designed to instruct participants in the advanced use of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT).  The course will consist of didactic presentations and participant interactions.  Interspersed in the presentation will be videotapes of the course director and other experts conducting IPT.  Group discussion, role-playing and review of participant videotapes will help to synthesize the information and examples presented.

This course fulfills the criteria Booster/Advanced IPT Training for Level B and Community-Based Training, and is open to all clinicians interested in Advanced IPT training.

All class sessions will be in four hour blocks from noon to 4 PM Pacific Standard Time (Los Angeles).  Please be SURE that you have the correct time for your home location when you register.

Course Objectives

This CE Course is targeted towards all clinicians who have completed Level A Training. The instructional level is advanced

At the conclusion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Treat complex patients using IPT principles
  2. Identify different attachment styles
  3. Identify ways to adapt IPT to various attachment styles
  4. Create an Interpersonal Formulation and Summary for a complex patient.
  5. Conduct a communication analysis
  6. Conduct a Role Play
  7. Conduct the conclusion of IPT and maintenance treatment
  8. Work with patients with grief and loss issues

About the Instructor

headshot of Scott StuartDr. Stuart is a psychiatrist and an Emeritus Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Iowa (USA) as well as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.  He has been active in clinical work, education and research in the areas of Interpersonal Psychotherapy and perinatal psychiatry for over three decades.

Dr. Stuart completed his medical training at the University of Kansas, followed by internship at the University of Pittsburgh.

He also completed a sabbatical year at the University of New South Wales in 2001.  He has received several teaching awards, including the John Clancy Teacher of the Year Award (University of Iowa).

Dr. Stuart is the Founder and Director of the Interpersonal Psychotherapy Institute. He has also authored a number of articles on IPT, and is the co-author of Interpersonal Psychotherapy: A Clinician’s Guide (2nd ed), as well as IPT Handbooks for adults, adolescents, and groups.  He has been conducting workshops and training in IPT internationally for over 25 years.
