IPT Institute Singapore is a national branch of IPT Institute International, dedicated to advancing the practice and training of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) throughout Singapore and the broader region. Through strategic collaboration with clinicians, educators, and mental health professionals, the Institute supports the systematic dissemination of IPT, promotes evidence-based practice standards, and cultivates an expanding network of certified practitioners committed to enhancing mental health outcomes across Singapore and neighboring countries.
History
The introduction of IPT to Singapore began in the early 2000’s when the Singapore military counseling arm organized the first IPT training programs. Following this initial introduction, organization-based IPT trainings occurred on an ad hoc basis for over a decade.
A significant milestone occurred in 2018 when IPT was formally introduced to Medical Social Workers (MSWs) at Singapore’s largest public hospital. Building on this foundation, IPT-focused sharing sessions commenced in 2019 within the hospital’s Medical Social Services department. The program’s reach expanded considerably from 2021, extending to other healthcare institutions and community agencies through collaborative efforts with psychologists and medical social workers from other public hospitals, with support from Dr Scott Stuart and the IPT Institute International. This same year marked another pivotal moment when IPT was formally integrated as a clinical service offering within the hospital.
Since 2023, public IPT Level A training programs have been conducted annually through a partnership between a social worker/ therapist and IPT Institute International. As the cohort of trained mental health clinicians from various disciplines, agencies and healthcare settings grew, the Singapore IPT network was established and continues to expand. Today, Low Hui Ching is the chief local IPT trainer and supervisor, certified by IPT Institute International, and she and colleagues deliver comprehensive IPT training programs both domestically and internationally.
