IPT Institute Training and Certification follows a sequential pathway (see depiction below).
-
Step 1: Basic Training in IPT (Level A or equivalent)
This can be a Level A course, Perinatal course, Adolescent course, or Families course. These courses are either live online or in-person, with 16 hours of didactic instruction, video review & discussion, small group interactions, and practice of IPT skills & techniques. -
Step 2: Level B, Community-Based Training
Upon completion of Level A, clinicians may progress to Level B training. This includes community-based case supervision individually or in small groups, along with submission and approval of 2 portfolios at a satisfactory (or higher) level of quality and adherence. Level B completion also requires 8 hours of an Advanced / Booster course. Level B is designed to be completed within 6-8 months. -
Step 3: Level C, IPT Certified Therapist
Following successful completion of Level B training, clinicians may complete further case supervision, along with 2 additional portfolios rated at satisfactory (or higher) on quality and adherence, to be certified as an IPT Certified Therapist. -
Step 4: Level D, IPT Supervisor
If desired and approved, clinicians may progress to Level D training. Progression to this level requires nomination by the Level C supervisor and an application to the IPT Institute. Supervisor training requires a 16 hour course, co-leading a supervision group with an experienced supervisor at a satisfactory level, and a supervision portfolio from other supervision groups. -
Step 5: Level E, IPT Instructor
This level requires nomination by the Level C & D supervisors and trainers. This step is reserved for very experienced IPT clinicians and requires 16 hours of coursework and co-teaching of several courses at a satisfactory level.
